Chairperson of the Finglas and Ballymun Policing Committee, Cllr Paul McAuliffe has said that a key CCTV camera in the area will be replaced and protected regardless of the cost. The camera which was fought for by residents for many years was installed so that a part of the area could be monitored by near-by Finglas Police Station. Within weeks of the camera being installed it was ‘criminally damaged’ so that it could not be used. Local reports suggest that the camera was intentionally ‘shot-out’ however in a reply from An Garda Siochana to Cllr McAuliffe the Gardai said they were farmiliar with the reports but could not confirm them.
Cllr McAuliffe said he “welcomed the City Council’s decision to reinstall the camera and protect it further. This camera was deliberately removed because it was putting pressure on those involved in criminal activity. Society cannot let criminals win in situations like this and we need to send a message that the rule of law applies.”
