Revenue must do more to stop new Internet telephone scam

Cllr Paul McAuliffe has warned members of the public not to use phone numbers for the Revenue Commissioners that they find on the website TAXOFFICEIRELAND.COM People searching on google and other search engines for phone numbers for the Revenue Commissioners may find phone numbers on this website and be unaware that dialling these premium  rate numbers can cost over €3 per minute, when in fact there are official revenue numbers which are free or lo-call.

Cllr McAuliffe has slammed the Chairman of the Revenue Commissioner, who has been made aware of the issue but has failed to do more to protect customers. These scam sites should be blocked from being directed to the revenue telephone system.

“Unsuspecting members of the public are being scammed by a rogue website which is taking advantage of people who are seeking to get in contact with this key public service.

I was appalled to hear that one constituent was charged €36 for a ten minute call to Revenue. A greater effort is needed by Revenue to ensure that the public are aware of the proper way to get in contact and are not left vulnerable to scammer’s taking advantage of the information vacuum.”

Cllr McAuliffe urged members of the public to use only contact details that they acquire from the official revenue website.
